I want you to be motivated to find out what you can do to go that extra mile and make a difference

Now, I don’t know about you but I keep seeing more and more online about living a zero-waste lifestyle. Maybe it’s because I am constantly looking for ways to reduce my plastic consumption or ways to better myself. Anyway, my social media newsfeeds seem to be absolutely covered. I’m loving it! I get to scroll through social media but feel like I’m actually gaining knowledge at the same time.

Inspiration

One of my favourite accounts I recently came across was Zerowastechef who amazingly has followed three main rules since 2011 – No packaging. Nothing processed. No Trash. She is also completely plastic free in all parts of her life, in and out of the kitchen. It may surprise you to know she even has a small daughter. Wonderwoman!

One thing that I found super fascinating is her love for fermentation. It’s crazy to think how much-fermented food people used to eat and now we’ve almost completely lost that skill. Which is sad as it’s something that’s so useful and great for the planet and also our gut health.

The Comeback Kid

Luckily for us, fermentation is making a comeback! Which I couldn’t be more excited about. I’m thinking kombucha is setting the trend when it comes to bringing fermentation back. If you haven’t already, be sure to check out our favourite Kombucha #solstyle.

Anyway, before I get too off track, I wanted to talk about living a zero-waste lifestyle. You see the reason this links to fermentation is because fermenting food is such a fantastic way of using up food waste that otherwise might end up in the bin (or hopefully compost). A crazy 1/3 of food bought ends up in the bin. There are people out there who would do anything for a bit of extra food, but yet here is 1/3 being wasted.

I think those figures are something that really stood out to me and made me want to make a change. Not only in my life but I want to positively influence others to take a step in the right direction too. I guess which is one of the reasons I’m writing this post; not to nag you, but to help educate you by sharing my knowledge and inspiring you to search for more.  I want you to be motivated to find out what you can do to go that extra mile and make a difference.

It’s Homemade Vinegar time!

I have recently started making my own homemade vinegar. This is such a fantastic way to use up fruit skins or cores. Fruits such as apples, mangoes, pears, and pineapples all work really well. The best way is to leave the scraps in a jar in the freezer until you have enough to fill the whole jar. Then you add a Tbsp of white sugar and fill it up with water. Leave it out on the side with the lid on or tea towel banded on tightly. Give it a good stir/shake every day.

* Bonus * You may even end up with a scoby on top which you can then use to make kombucha

To start with it will smell a bit like alcohol and then eventually after a couple of weeks it will begin to smell more like vinegar. Keep brewing until you think it is strong enough. The stronger it becomes the better it is as a cleaning product around the house.

The main thing I love so much about this is that you’re using all natural products. You know exactly what you are putting on your skin or down the sink. There are no secret chemicals ending up in the ocean or causing harm to the soil in your garden. No secret chemicals irritating your skin or damaging your hair. It’s all natural and that’s what I love!

Now What? Zero-Waste Vinegar

Now you have so many choices. Vinegar is great to add to dressing for salads, cleaning the house with natural ingredients and no chemicals. It’s also great for washing your hair or helping with dry skin conditions like eczema. It will work wonders in all parts of the house and is super easy to make. What more could you want from life hey?

Plus need I remind you, that food waste is one of the biggest contributors to methane gasses been given off into the environment, which in turn causes global warming. If you’re reading this blog post you probably already know the damage global warming is doing. It’s melting the ice caps, bleaching our coral and killing animals in its wake.

I guess for me when I think about this, it literally just makes me want to reduce my waste as much as I possibly can. This is one of the main reasons why living a zero-waste lifestyle and fermentation both fascinate me so much.
